The most common haircare mistakes in everyday life — and how to avoid them immediately
- Too hot water when washing
- Massaging shampoo into the lengths
- Too much shampoo/conditioner
- Heat protection too sparingly or unevenly
- Brushing wet hair roughly
- Forgetting about the scalp completely
- Washing hair too often
- Using masks incorrectly
- Too frequent heat styling
- Wrong product choice for hair type
- Rubbing after washing
- Neglecting your ends
- No regular cut
- Mini checklist: “This is what a clean routine looks like”

The biggest damage is rarely caused by a single product. Usually, it's habits: too hot water, incorrect brushing, masks on the roots or heat without protection. Here's a routine suitable for everyday use that works for most hair types.
Too hot water
Hot water stresses hair and scalp, can dry out lengths and cause color to fade faster.
Better: Wash lukewarm, optionally finish with a short cool rinse.
Shampoo on the lengths
Shampoo is intended for scalp cleansing — the lengths get cleaned as you rinse it out.
Better: Shampoo on the scalp, conditioner/mask on the lengths and ends.
Too much product
More product doesn't mean more effect — often just more residue and weighed-down hair.
Better: Start small, add more when needed.
Heat protection not distributed evenly
“Spray once over the top layer” is often not enough.
Better: Apply in sections, comb through briefly, let it soak in.
Brushing wet hair roughly
Wet hair is sensitive. Rough detangling = unnecessary hair breakage.
Better: Fingers or a wide-tooth comb, from the ends upwards.
Forgetting the scalp
Healthy hair starts at the root. Those who only care for the lengths often overlook itching, build-up or excess oil.
Better: Occasionally a gentle scalp scrub or a light serum (use sparingly).
Washing too often
Can unbalance the scalp (too dry or too oily as a reaction).
Better: Adjust frequency, not according to “rules,” but as required.
Using masks incorrectly
Too short, too much, at the roots — that's often the result: weighed down rather than nourished.
Better: On towel-dried hair, lengths/ends only, 15-20 minutes.
Too frequent restyling with heat
Heat damage rarely shows up immediately — it creeps in gradually: frizz, split ends, a dull finish.
Better: Reduce heat, build in “rest days.”
Products do not match the hair type
Fine hair is quickly flattened by rich formulas, thick/curly hair often needs more “substance.”
Rubbing after washing
Rubbing roughens up the cuticle.
Better: Gently squeeze out, microfiber towel or cotton shirt.
Neglecting your ends
The ends are the oldest and most sensitive part of the hair.
Better: Oil/serum targeted at the ends, plus protection against rubbing (e.g. when sleeping).
No regular cut
Not because of growth, but to keep split ends under control.
Better: Depending on hair condition, every 6—8 weeks or as needed.
Mini checklist: “This is what a clean routine looks like”
- Wash lukewarm
- Scalp-only shampoo
- Conditioner on lengths/ends only
- Mask once a week, 15-20 min
- Gently detangle wet hair
- Heat protection always when styling
- Protect your ends and have them trimmed regularly
